2007-2008 summer track sprint series?
Filed Under:
Who's interested? I need suggestions.
Next summer, I'd like to run a track sprint series. Rowan Geddes complained to me a few years ago now that if you're a track sprinter, and you're not in the VIS/AIS or otherwise elite level, there's very little in the way of match sprint racing. It's not unreasonable to expect this to be the case, match sprinting is time consuming and running it in with track carnivals takes too long.
So, what can we do for Rowan, Nathan Larkin, Richard Grace, and anyone else that wants to do regular match sprinting? I know there's a lot of Blackburn trackies that would like the chance to do more of it. Brett Curren and I discussed it and his eyes lit up (as well they should!), and of course Nicko (John Nicholson), as a former world match sprint champion, was interested too. Maybe we can get the old lion out racing again?
Some possibilities :
Once a fortnight over the summer track season, run a 'sprint series' on Sunday afternoons at the BBN velodrome. Round robins rather than eliminations (so everyone gets more chances to race). Graded, with series aggregate and daily prizes. Maybe do grading by initial flying 200 times and then promotion/relegation through grades depending on ongoing results.
Once a fortnight run Friday night sprints at Blackburn or one of the other banked velodromes - Packer Park (CCCC) isn't banked enough so it's not a good venue for match sprinting. I'm not so keen on weeknights, people that work for a living can't often get away from work early enough to make this practical, but it might work?
Any other suggestions? I want to make this run next summer, and input is much appreciated.

Rob, any time you want to have a play on the trackbike in a safe environment (ie: no other riders on the track etc) let me know and we'll make a time to close the velodrome. Your first steps with track need to be in a controlled environment without roadbikes - they don't mix well.

I've spoken to quite a number of people (Nicko, Mal Sawford from CCCC, and Blackburn's Phil Liggett in training, Wayne Evans) and there's a fair bit of enthusiasm. Trek are possibly interested in supporting the series in some form as well. I'm leaning towards a once a fortnight Sunday afternoon series at the moment, as it looks like I'll be organising it and I want -some- life outside of cycling!
My full support and help!

Hey Carl.
This is a fantastic idea. I like the thought of Sunday afternoon belting around elbow to elbow with evryone. Maybe even a Keirin to add to the mix, heats and a final once a month as well?? I know you will need some help and support on this so cycling does not consume your life so caount me in for as much help as you need.

Hi Carl,
I am happy to help out as well. I am sure that this could turn out to be
a hugely successful event. Gee I might even be able to convince the wife
to help out as well 8-).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. The next thing to do is to get Blackburn onside. As such, we may need a few bodies at the BBN AGM. I'll make sure I'm there, but can anyone else make it?
Blackburn AGM Meeting
9th May 2007 7:30PM at the clubrooms.

Hi Guys
Yeah I am in. The next year I am really going to try to get a sprint so track training I reckon should be good for that. If it is on Sunday afternoon, that is fine because I would have done Glenvale in the morning(bit of extra work has never hurt anybody) Yes to buy a track bike!
Cheers

It's not training, it's racing

Nick,
This isn't a training session, it's track sprint racing (match sprints, the one on one stuff). We'll certainly cater for beginners, but it's not a training session as such.

I know Paul Logan (Coburg) was talking about wanting to hold Track racing at their Velo over the Summer months. Not sure if is going ahead though. Last Summer we had the lights on for a regular Wednesday night motor pace session. This was for geared & 1 geared bikes & was a training thing only.
If Blackburn don't come to the party, maybe contact Paul. I reckon that (Coburg) Velo ROCKS! As far as outdoor Velos go. It was the reason I joined Coburg CC.
