Peak Torque
How hard do you really have to push
There's an age-old question in track sprint, and it's this : "How strong do you have to be?" or variations on that. Why do we care? Because, unlike our roadie and to a lesser extent track enduro cousins, we have to push very hard indeed for a few pedal strokes to get up to speed, on what may be a pretty large gear.
No commercially available power meters give the full picture. Powertap, SRM etc do not report peak torque in a useful way - they report averages (but measure everything, if you know how to ask them the right questions). Averages for torque are nice to know, but don't really answer the question. Peak torque is how strong you are, and that's a very interesting figure to know.
I've been lucky enough to be involved in assisting a study being done around these parts which is looking deeply into the torque requirements of sprint cycling. It's been very interesting so far and we're lucky to have some very fancy torque measurement equipment available to test some of the squad riders on. I might even get a go on the thing myself if I'm lucky and they want to get some junk data from an old guy who's broken at the moment! But anyway, it's proving to be very interesting indeed. We might even be able to answer the question at the end of it.
Interesting times!

More equipment
Go-fast bits ....
At aboc, we like to look after our riders, and as the aboc sprint coach, I look after my sprinters. We have Good Gear. I'm still saving up for the super wheels (iO and Comete) but I do have a set of helmets, the current generation Casco warp 4 carbon arrived today to go with the Warp 3 that I got a few months ago. The warp 4 carbon is the small/medium size, good to fit on smaller sprinters heads, where the warp 3 is my size.
aboc sprinters get to borrow these helmets on race days. Nice ....

catchup!
3 weeks in a paragraph
Drove to Sydney- worked at Junior Aussies. Long drive not good for niggling back injury.
Drove back from Sydney, long drive really not good for more acute back injury. Back got worse. Back got worse, sciatica! Ouch! Missed round 6 of SSS due to back injury (argh!). Sitting at computer very bad, no typing! Seeing another doctor today for second opinions on best treatment. Been working a bit on The Book while lying on front using drugs that are well and trully on the banned list to manage pain and inflamation. Also did flatwater kayaking instructor assessment (passed ... before it got bad enough to stop that sort of thing!). Will blog more once able to sit still-ish - now using swissball as a chair - don't tell Rip! (injoke ... ) but it helps to keep things moving.
Off to get CT scan results etc now ... Hope motorbike is ok to ride in this state!
Spin 1 for 2011 last night - good turnout, thanks to Merv and Bev for their help, thanks to Lucie for cooking the UberBolla. It was much missed over summer!
WILL get better.
WILL ride <13s at BBN next summer!
WILL get a 2x bodyweight squat!
WILL stop whinging and making excuses!
WILL go now and get stuff done!
